We hear a lot about Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) these days and with good reason. When people want information, their first port of call is generally the internet, which is why well written SEO friendly web-content makes all the difference. If you want to write content that will keep your readers interested and convert them into clients, here are a few tips from Perth’s SEO experts.
1. Think content and structure
Step away from the keyboard, until you’ve worked out your message. Ask yourself:
- why and I writing this – your purpose
- who is my audience – your customer
- what do I want to achieve – your desired outcome
Once you’ve worked out why, who and what, identifying key words and messages is easier and helps you to write content which is relevant, interesting, SEO friendly and effective.
2. A clear structure is essential for:
- Introducing your topic and engage your reader
- Delivering a message which is thought-provoking or motivating
- Summarising information with a call to action
Write naturally, search engine algorithms are sophisticated and can identify overstuffed content. Packing content with too many keywords can negatively affect your search engine ranking.
3. Headings – the writers best friend
Using headings and subheadings (H1’s, H2’s, H3’s etc) are a great way to attract a reader and an easy way to order a post. They improve readability by helping the reader to scan for content. Using SEO words in headings helps search engines like Google to pick up topics and can improve your ranking.
4. How much is too much?
Balance is everything…too little content and you miss an opportunity – too much and the reader loses interest. Generally an article should contain between 300 – 500 words, any longer risks being boring or repetitive. Keep content sharp and relevant with 1 or 2 searchable words per hundred words.
Linking to a previous post can improve your site’s reputation and because ranking is cumulative, it’s one of the most important factors in determining how your site’s search ranks on popular search engines like Google or Yahoo (Read our article on SEO Link Juice).
5. Keep it coming!
Regularly adding content to your website pays dividends because it demonstrates to search engines like Google that your website is alive and kicking. Google is less likely to crawl (search) a non-active website which quickly loses relevance and appeal. Frequently updating your site and using diagnostics like Webmaster Tools and Google Analytics enables you to track traffic and improve your ranking.
Optimise, enhance and improve
Although nothing beats good content, plugins like Yoast can help you take your blog writing to the next level. Plugin’s check if keywords are present in headings, page titles, URL’s, content and meta-descriptions and calculate the number of words and the density of usage of the focus keyword in the article.
